Specialist rehabilitation after stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's, and other neurological conditions — with therapists trained at CMC Vellore.
Overview
Neurological rehabilitation is a structured, long-arc process that helps the brain and spinal cord relearn movement, balance, and function after injury or disease. The strongest evidence supports task-specific, high-repetition practice combined with early mobilisation, family involvement, and goal-based reviews. Our team follows this model — sessions are 45–60 minutes, functional targets are written on the wall, and progress is reviewed weekly with the patient and one primary caregiver.
We work with adults recovering from ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, spinal cord injuries (complete and incomplete), traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Guillain–Barré syndrome, Bell's palsy, and vestibular disorders. Many patients transfer to us directly after discharge from CMC Vellore Hospital's neurology and neurosurgery wards, and we coordinate closely with treating consultants when a shared plan helps.
The goal is never a generic recovery number — it is your goal. Standing to transfer without help. Walking to the front gate. Writing legibly. Returning to work in a modified role. We map that goal into weekly milestones, and we tell you plainly when a plateau is real versus when a different technique should be tried.
Conditions we treat
Each condition below links to a detailed guide with symptoms, evidence-based treatment, and a typical recovery timeline.
Treatment approaches
Repeated practice of the exact movement you need — sit-to-stand, spoon-to-mouth, one-step turn — at a difficulty that keeps success rates around 70%.
Parallel bars, treadmill with body-weight support, obstacle courses, and outdoor walking practice on the clinic's dedicated gait strip.
Hands-on facilitation to normalise tone and improve motor control, used most in the early recovery weeks.
One caregiver joins the last 10 minutes of every session so home practice is safe, consistent, and confident.

Vellore context
Vellore is a regional referral hub. Families travel from Tirupattur, Gudiyatham, Arni, Arcot, Ranipet, and even from Chittoor and Krishnagiri for neuro care at CMC Vellore. Many stay in Bagayam or Sathuvachari during the sub-acute phase, which is exactly when structured outpatient rehabilitation makes the biggest difference to long-term outcomes.
Our flagship centre on Katpadi Road is 1.2 km from CMC Vellore Hospital, which makes daily rehab practical for inpatients' families and outpatients alike. For patients who cannot travel, we offer home-based neuro rehab in central Vellore, Katpadi, and Bagayam with the same therapist across sessions for continuity.
Neurological recovery is not linear. Some weeks you will feel like you are moving forward. Others will feel flat. We plan for this — we track objective measures (Berg Balance, 10-metre walk, Barthel index) so that even when it does not feel like progress, we can see whether it is happening.
For long-arc conditions like Parkinson's and MS, we build a maintenance program you can do at home four days a week, with a supervised session every 2–4 weeks. For sub-acute stroke and SCI, the early phase is intensive — often five days a week — and then tapers as home practice becomes reliable.
If you are researching options for a family member currently admitted at CMC Vellore, we are happy to speak with you before discharge. A 20-minute planning conversation often prevents weeks of confusion afterwards.
Outcome measures we use include the Berg Balance Scale, 10-Metre Walk Test, Timed Up and Go, Barthel Index, Fugl-Meyer for upper limb, and the Modified Rankin Scale. These are documented at intake and every four weeks so progress is objective, not just impressionistic.
Equipment access: our neuro floor has parallel bars, a tilt table for early standing, a body-weight-supported treadmill for gait retraining, a standing frame, wobble boards, mirror-therapy setups, and cognitive-motor dual-task equipment. We also have a small outdoor gait strip for community-mobility practice.
Caregiver support: neuro recovery is a family process. Caregivers can develop back pain, sleep loss, and burnout that undermine the patient's recovery. We include caregiver posture, transfer technique, and pacing advice as a routine part of the first month.
Coordinating with CMC Vellore: with your consent we share progress updates back to the treating neurologist, neurosurgeon, or physiatrist. When clinical status changes — for example, new seizures, worsening spasticity, or unexplained pain — we escalate quickly rather than persisting with a plan that is no longer appropriate.
Evidence base in brief: task-specific practice, aerobic conditioning, and repeated dose-adequate movement training are the interventions with the strongest evidence for post-stroke recovery. Passive modalities and low-intensity therapy alone do not drive meaningful motor recovery. Our sessions are structured to deliver dose that matters.
Session frequency: sub-acute stroke and SCI cases typically start with five sessions per week and taper as home practice becomes reliable. Chronic neuro conditions like Parkinson's and MS often work best with two supervised sessions per week alongside a daily home program.
Red-flag surveillance: new headaches, unexplained fever, sudden worsening of weakness, seizures, or unusual behavioural change are escalated to your neurologist the same day. Neuro rehab is a partnership with medical care, not a replacement for it.
Discharge and long-term maintenance: neuro conditions rarely end with a clean discharge. We shift patients into a lower-intensity maintenance model with reviews every four to eight weeks so gains are preserved and any decline is caught early.
