Structured recovery after knee replacement, hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, spine surgery, and fracture fixation — with protocol-based progression.
Overview
Post-surgical rehabilitation is where surgical outcomes are made. A well-executed knee replacement can still end with a stiff, painful knee if the first 12 weeks of rehab are inconsistent — and a modest surgical result can end with excellent function when rehab is done well. Our post-surgery pathway follows the operating surgeon's protocol closely and progresses on measurable criteria, not on the calendar alone.
We work with patients after total knee replacement, total hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator cuff repair, lumbar and cervical spine surgery, fracture fixation (upper and lower limb), and general post-operative reconditioning. Many of our patients are operated at CMC Vellore Hospital and transfer to us for outpatient rehab within days of discharge.
Every case begins with a review of the operative note or discharge summary, followed by a screening of pain, swelling, wound, and movement. Progression rules are written down: which ranges to gain by which week, which loads are safe, and what warning signs to report. Nothing about your recovery should feel improvised.
Conditions we treat
Each condition below links to a detailed guide with symptoms, evidence-based treatment, and a typical recovery timeline.
Treatment approaches
We follow your surgeon's written protocol where one exists, and standard evidence-based protocols where it does not. Progression is criterion-based, not time-based.
Compression, elevation, ice, TENS, and manual techniques in the first 1–3 weeks so exercise can happen at all.
Progressive loading of the operated joint and its neighbours, plus general conditioning to protect cardiovascular fitness.
Stairs, sit-to-stand, walking distance, and sport-specific tests before we close out care.
Your first visit
Vellore context
CMC Vellore performs a very high volume of joint replacements, spine surgeries, and fracture fixations. Many patients from across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka stay in Vellore for the first weeks of rehab before travelling home. We schedule intensive early rehab that respects that travel timeline.
Because our flagship centre is 1.2 km from CMC Vellore Hospital, follow-up visits to the operating team can be combined with rehab in the same trip — a small logistical detail that makes recovery much less stressful for out-of-town families.
The most common reason post-surgery rehab underperforms is inconsistency in the first six weeks. We build the schedule around your life so consistency is realistic — early-morning slots for working patients, home visits for out-of-town families, and a WhatsApp check-in on non-visit days.
We track objective measures at each visit — knee flexion in degrees, quadriceps torque, 10-metre walk time, stair test — so both you and your surgeon can see progress in numbers, not just impressions.
If your surgeon has not given a written protocol, we ask them for one or share ours for approval. This alignment avoids the common problem of a patient hearing different things from surgeon and physiotherapist.
Coordination with your surgeon: where a written surgical protocol exists we follow it precisely. Where one does not, we use standard evidence-based protocols and share our plan with the operating team so everyone is aligned.
Wound and swelling surveillance: in the first two weeks we screen every visit for signs of infection, DVT, and dehiscence. Any concern is escalated to your surgeon the same day rather than waiting for the next planned follow-up.
Objective measurement: knee flexion in degrees, quadriceps torque, 10-metre walk time, and stair-climb time are documented at each visit so both you and your surgeon can see progress in numbers.
Home-to-clinic transition: for out-of-town families staying near CMC Vellore, we run intensive early rehab five days a week and then taper as home practice becomes reliable. Once you are home, we hand off to a physiotherapist in your home town with a written summary and a follow-up plan.
Evidence base in brief: modern enhanced-recovery-after-surgery (ERAS) pathways favour early controlled movement over prolonged bed-rest. Structured post-operative rehabilitation in the first six to twelve weeks is a stronger predictor of functional outcome than most other post-op variables.
Insurance coordination: for insured patients we help with paperwork, ICD-coded receipts, and if needed a treatment-summary letter for the insurer. Cashless arrangements are available with select TPAs — please confirm at booking.
Red-flag surveillance: DVT signs, wound infection, unexpected fever, or a sudden loss of range are escalated to your surgeon the same day. We do not persist with exercise when a medical review is needed first.
Discharge planning: at the end of the protocol we discharge you with a written maintenance plan and a follow-up point in three to six months to check that gains have held.
Milestones we track: knee flexion in degrees, straight-leg-raise quality, walking distance without a walker, stair-climb reciprocation, and pain scores at rest and on load. Every milestone has a target week from your surgery date, adjusted for age and comorbidities.
Return-to-driving guidance: for right-sided lower-limb surgery, most patients regain safe driving reaction times between four and eight weeks depending on procedure. We test this objectively with reaction-time drills before we sign off on driving.
