Prosthesis Fitting & Training in Vellore

Custom prosthetic limb prescription, fitting coordination, gait training and long-term follow-up for adults and children after amputation.

Overview

What is Prosthesis Fitting & Training?

A prosthesis is a custom artificial limb that replaces a body part lost to trauma, diabetes, vascular disease or cancer. At Dr. Karolin Rockson PT in Vellore we lead the rehabilitation half of the prosthesis journey — pre-prosthetic conditioning of the residual limb, prescription support, fitting-day gait training, and long-term follow-up as your body and life change.

Whether you have had an above-knee, below-knee, upper-limb or partial-foot amputation, structured prosthetic training makes the difference between a prosthesis that sits in a cupboard and one that lets you walk to the shop, ride a two-wheeler, return to work, and play with your grandchildren.

We coordinate with prosthetist-orthotists in Vellore, Chennai and Bangalore for device fabrication, and with surgical teams at CMC Vellore for post-amputation follow-up. Home visits and online video reviews are available across the Vellore–Ranipet–Arcot corridor.

Treatment approaches

How we treat

Pre-prosthetic conditioning

Stump wrapping, desensitisation, mirror therapy for phantom pain, hip and core strength, and single-leg balance — often started within 5–7 days of surgery.

Fitting-day support

We attend the prosthetist workshop with you where possible so socket-fit, alignment and gait feedback happen in real time.

Progressive gait training

Parallel bars → walker → single stick → independent walking, with ramps, uneven ground and stairs graded across 8–16 weeks.

Return-to-life planning

Job simulation, two-wheeler transfers, temple visits, marketplace walking — practised in-clinic before you attempt them outside.

Your first visit

What to expect on day one

  1. Step 1. History of amputation cause, surgical dates, comorbidities and any prior prosthesis.
  2. Step 2. Residual limb inspection — skin, shape, sensation, joint range.
  3. Step 3. Baseline strength, balance and single-leg stance testing.
  4. Step 4. Discussion of pathway — pre-prosthetic, fitting, or long-term follow-up phase.
  5. Step 5. First session on the highest-priority goal (usually stump shaping or standing balance).

Vellore context

Why patients in Vellore choose our clinic

Vellore sees a heavy load of diabetic and traumatic amputations through CMC Vellore, Government Vellore Medical College and the SIPCOT industrial belt. Many patients stay in Vellore during the 6–12 week wait for a definitive prosthesis — that window is ideal for pre-prosthetic conditioning.

We coordinate with prosthetist-orthotists in Vellore and Chennai for socket fabrication and adjustment. For patients getting devices made in Bangalore or Chennai, we run local pre- and post-fitting rehab.

Types of lower-limb prosthesis we train patients on: patellar-tendon-bearing (PTB), total-surface-bearing (TSB) and pin-suspension for below-knee; ischial-containment sockets with polycentric or hydraulic knees for above-knee; and Syme's / partial-foot devices where indicated.

Upper-limb prostheses range from cosmetic passive hands to body-powered hooks to myoelectric hands. Choice depends on your work, dominant side, budget and hand-motor pattern preserved on the sound side.

Phantom-limb pain is common in the first six months. Mirror therapy, desensitisation, graded motor imagery and — for stubborn cases — TENS applied to the residual limb reduce pain in most patients without adding medications.

Skin problems cause more prosthesis breakdowns than mechanical failures. Daily skin checks, hygiene routines, sock-management for volume changes, and same-day action on redness or hot-spots are taught at every session.

Return-to-work planning: we simulate stair climbing, ladder use, standing endurance, carrying loads and long two-wheeler rides in-clinic before your first day back so the prosthesis is stress-tested here, not at your workplace.

Long-term follow-up cadence: monthly for the first six months after a new fitting, three-monthly for growing children, six-monthly for stable adult users. Small socket adjustments at the right time prevent skin breakdown and falls.

Fitting-day support: for major fittings we can attend the prosthetist's workshop with you so alignment and gait tweaks happen in real time — much better than back-and-forth WhatsApp video later.

Insurance and funding: physiotherapy sessions are covered by most Indian outpatient policies with correct documentation. Devices are increasingly covered under implants — check your policy wording. ALIMCO and several NGOs subsidise basic prostheses; we help identify and apply.
