Overview

Understanding athetosis

Athetosis is one of the most common reasons patients walk into our Katpadi Road physiotherapy clinic. It is not a diagnosis in itself — it is a signal from the body that a joint, muscle, nerve or system needs attention. In this guide our senior physiotherapist Dr. Karolin Rockson PT (ex. CMC Vellore, 15+ years) walks you through what athetosis typically means, when it is safe to try home care, when to see a physio, and the evidence-based treatments we use here in Vellore.

When to act

Signs a physiotherapist can help

  • Athetosis that lasts longer than a week or keeps returning
  • Pain, stiffness or weakness that limits work, sleep or daily activities
  • Loss of confidence in walking, lifting, gripping or moving overhead
  • New neurological signs — numbness, tingling, weakness or balance loss
  • Recent injury, fall, surgery, stroke or hospitalisation
  • Symptoms that get worse with activity or after long periods of sitting

Home care

What you can do today

Athetosis — first-line self-care

  1. 1

    First 48 hours

Relative rest — reduce, don't stop, activity. Ice for 15 minutes 3–4 times a day if there is swelling or heat.

  2. 2

    Gentle movement

Move the affected area through comfortable range every 1–2 hours. Complete rest for athetosis usually makes things worse, not better.

  3. 3

    Simple pain relief

Paracetamol at recommended dose, and NSAIDs if your doctor has said they are safe for you.

  4. 4

    Sleep & posture

Use a supportive pillow, keep the affected side supported at night, and avoid long periods in one position during the day.

  5. 5

    Book a physio review

If athetosis isn't clearly improving in 7–10 days, or you are worried, book a 45-minute assessment. WhatsApp us at +91 97878 02818.

Our approach

How Vellore Physio treats athetosis

Precise assessment

Detailed 45-minute assessment covers movement, strength, neurology, function and lifestyle — with a plan you can read.

Family-first

Caregivers are trained in every session. You leave able to continue the work at home.

Time-boxed

Progress is reviewed at 2 and 4 weeks. No open-ended packages, no drip-fed sessions.

Evidence-first

Only treatments with real evidence for your condition — no unproven modalities.

Active rehab

Every session includes movement and loading. Passive-only treatment plans aren't offered here.

Outcome-tracked

Objective measures — ROM, strength, walking speed, balance, PROMs — tracked at every review.

Evidence

What the guidelines say

Modern physiotherapy for athetosis is guided by international clinical practice guidelines (NICE, APTA, ICF, WCPT). The strongest evidence supports early assessment, active exercise-based rehab and shared decision-making — not long courses of passive treatment. We combine these guidelines with the reality of daily life in the Vellore region: heavy commutes on two-wheelers, high manual-labour loads, humid weather, and family caregiving expectations.

What helps / what doesn't

Benefits

  • Regular short bouts of movement (not one long session)
  • Sleep of at least 7 hours a night — pain thresholds fall without it
  • Loaded exercise progressed under supervision
  • Hands-on physio combined with a small home programme
  • A clear return-to-activity plan, in writing

Trade-offs

  • Complete bed rest for more than a day or two
  • Escalating pain medications without a movement plan
  • Chasing multiple opinions without acting on any of them
  • Passive-only treatment for weeks with no home programme
  • Ignoring red flags in the hope they will settle

Common questions about athetosis

If athetosis lasts longer than a week, keeps coming back, or stops you doing normal work or sleep, book a 45-minute physio assessment. Sudden severe symptoms, weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder / bowel control need same-day medical attention.
